Presidential candidate and Unity Party Leader Dr Richard Kanyangu was born in Mutare and grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe. He is seventh born in a family of ten children. He attended local schools and upon completing his A’ levels he left Zimbabwe to pursue studies at Middlesex University in London, England where he graduated with a Diploma in Mental Health.

Kanyangu worked at the Maudsley hospital in South London before moving to work as a deputy service manager and later and a service manager with Glen Care Group. He left Glen Care to pursue a new opportunity with Cygnet Health in East London. During this time he did his MSc in Management and Leadership in Health at Kingston University in UK and later did hid Doctorate studies in management with the Swiss Management University in Switzerland.

While living in UK, Kanyangu successfully ran a travel agency, nursing agency and a training company. In addition, he engaged in business in some African countries in search of opportunities to enhance communities and make a difference in people’s lives. In his travels and business he has developed significant links and networks across the African continent. With these links he has continued to pursue meaningful social development, change, leadership and governance.

In 2010 Kanyangu moved to Canada where he works in the health care field. He is also the founder and pastor of one of the fastest growing churches in his community. His focus at church is training youth leadership and management. He spends most of his free time giving free consultations to young African entrepreneurs, and coaching them on life and business skills.
An avid footballer, Kanyangu is considered one of the best players on his team. He is actively involved in setting up a football league geared towards international students.

Kanyangu is happily married to his wife Alice and they have three boys, Mutsa (MJ) aged 10, Peter (PJ) aged 6 and Ashley (AJ) aged 1 year.
